Modafinil is racemic - a fifty-fifty mixture of two mirror-image forms, the R-enantiomer of which is sold separately as armodafinil and persists rather longer in the body. Structurally it is a benzhydryl sulphinyl acetamide, unrelated to the amphetamines, and its subjective character is generally described as flatter and less euphoric than a classical stimulant's. It is not a hormone and shares nothing with the steroids it sits beside.
